LINCOLNSHIRE GALLERY 5
LEASINGHAM. CHURCH : ST ANDREW
Leasingham is just a couple of miles from Sleaford. Lovely village and lovely people! Spent an enjoyable couple of hours here, at one point tickling a pet sheep under her chin and holding some large and boisterous chickens that did not want to be held!
Did get to spend some time at the church as well. St Andrew's church is large and impressive. Some of the locals were very interested in what I was doing and were impressed with the number of miles that I had cycled. They were more impressed than me as by that time, in my own mind, I had crossed over the line to sheer stupidity!
Anyway, a couple of very impressive gargoyles, one above right with plant growing out of his head, and "lovely" grotesque with screwed up face and huge tongue. A closer look at two pictures above show that both gargoyles have been touched up around the mouth area. This is more modern work and has been put in to fill the hole where the original spout would have gone.
Those duly recorded it was back on to the saddle and back down the A15, a mere 22 miles back to my bed and breakfast!
NORTH RAUCEBY. CHURCH : ST PETER
North Rauceby is just two or three miles away from Leasingham, and close to Sleaford. The church of St Peter covers both North and South Rauceby. Sadly, several borded up windows were in evidence when I visited. Not vandalism I was assured by a local, just building work going on. Two lovely stone heads here. The one on the left could well be expressing an intense disliking of greenery! The stone head on the right appears to be in need of a good dentist, and also some reconstructive nasal surgery!
ASWARBY. CHURCH : ST DENIS
Aswarby is a quite gorgeous village just off the A15, a few miles South of Sleaford. Considering that you can see the card flying by on the A15 in the distance, the church of St Denis was amazingly peaceful and tranquil as I photographed a wide and varied selection of gargoyles and grotesques.
A nice selection here, including a mooning gargoyle. Sadly, this one wasn't a patch on the one seen the previous day at Easton On The Hill or the one in my own neck of the woods at Glinton.
This one, pictured middle left, has most of the classic features ie: hands clasped on buttucks and hole in bum where the spout would have originally been. However, this one did seem to be missing a head!
A quite beautiful church in a lovely part of South Lincolnshire. This church was open and is well worth a look if you are in the area.
GREATFORD. CHURCH : ST THOMAS A BECKET
Greatford can be found close to the A15, a few miles South of Bourne. Two grotesques shot from high on the tower in dreadful light and with steady rain falling. Amazing that these came out at all! If visiting here, also keep an eye out for the Roman Coffin, complete with lid, that stands near to the porch
