LINCOLNSHIRE GALLERY 4

 Kelby. CHURCH : ST ANDREW

As far as I am concerned, my experiences of visiting this church nicely sums up why I fell in love with church photography. I visited the church of St Andrew , Kelby on the third day of what turned out to be a 254 mile cycle around South Lincolnshire. A total of 56 churches were visited in that time, with this one being one of my favourites. Lighting conditions early on that day had been poor but the sun had come out by the time that I arrived at Kelby. A village that I had never heard of before getting out the Ordinace Survey Map, and would never had had any reason to visit if it were not for going to photograph the church.

A week escaping the rat race, no stress, no problems. Having lunch in a beautifully kepy churchyard, in a delightful village, with the Sun on my back, listening to the chirping of birds and the drone of bees in a nearby bush. All under the watchful gaze of what must be one of the best gargoyles that I have ever seen (pictured above)

This nicely sums up why I do what I do. For every place that is a disappointment there is a little gem like Kelby. Just notice the lips and cheeks in the two photographs immediately below. Can definitely detect the same hand at work in each.

HEYDOUR. CHURCH : ST MICHAEL & ALL ANGELS

The village of Heydour is about a mile and a half distant from neighbouring Kelby, pictured above. Have included a couple of examples here. The gargoyle above left is a very fine example. The part of a face pictured to the right of that is a curious thing and I suspect that this has a great deal of age to it.

ASLACKBY. CHURCH : ST JAMES THE GREAT

Aslackby (mystifyingly pronounced Azelby by the locals) is a favourite watering point for me whilst cycling in the area. The village is to be found just off of the A15, but it is peaceful and quiet.

Some nicely maintained church grounds and a few decent gargoyles and grotesques, which were in very good condition.

A very picturesque church and village this. If anyone is in the area, there are some delightful views of church and village to be had on the back road leading to neighbouring village of Kirkby Underwood.

The photographs above were taken early on in the morning, on a day when the sun shone incessently. A delight to be out!
