LINCOLNSHIRE GALLERY 3
STAMFORD. CHURCH : ST GEORGE
A proposed days churchcrawling tour of Stamford ended prematurely after the waether closed in lighting conditions became awful. I did manage to find the above two gargoyles pretty low down on a wall at St Georges church before the light went.
STOKE ROCHFORD. CHURCH : ST MARY & ST ANDREW
The two pictures above, and the picture on the left, were all taken on Boxing Day 2007, at the lovely church of St Mary and St Andrew at Stoke Rochford near to Grantham. This church stopped us in our tracks on the way to a football match. The driver (in an act of charity as it was Christmas!!) gave me five minutes to shoot the church, although how you can do justice to a church as lovely as this in five minutes is beyond me.
In five minutes I managed to shoot the exterior from several different angles, also finding four gargoyles. three of which are pictured here, and an elaborately carved deaths head stone in slate.
The three gargoyles pictured all appear to be very ancient, and weathered with age. Sadly, some of the detail has also been obscured with a fairly impressive growth of lichen! Sad this as all three would have been very impressive pieces of work.
DOWSBY. CHURCH : ST ANDREW
I made two separate vists to the church of St Andrew at Dowsby, with vastly differing lighting conditions. Gargoyle on the left, with Oriental features, was taken with the sun blazing down on a glorious early September afternoon. An event worthy of notice in itself in the damp and dismal English "Summer" of 2007. Made a fleeting re-visit in May 2008 and photographed a gargoyle that I had missed before. Lighting conditions were not good at all, so apologies for quality! This fella, with long, flowing mane, looks as if he is asleep!
SAPPERTON. CHURCH : ST NICHOLAS
OLD SOMERBY. CHURCH : ST MARY MAGDALENE
Nice Hair...!! Gargoyle from the church of St Nicholas at Sapperton. To the right of that a single gargoyle from Old Somerby, near to Grantham. This one wins the award for the most lop sided eyes!! Not my most favourite gargoyle by any stretch of the imagination...!!
HELPRINGHAM. CHURCH : ST ANDREW
Lovely village, and a nice church, but sadly the gargoyles at Helpringham have seen better days! In their time these would have been very nice pieces of work. Sadly now features have become worn and blurred with detail also being lost through growth of lichen. The gargoyle top right has fared slightly better through being on the North wall. All the other three pictured were on the South wall.
