LINCOLNSHIRE GALLERY 2
SWINSTEAD. CHURCH : ST MARY
This was the first church visited on what turned out to be just about the hottest day of the year in the drab English Summer of 2007. First church of the day and a lovely set of grotesques. This church was open, and I received a very pleasant welcome here. A lovely area, and some very pleasant people. The quality of the grotesque bottom right is particularly good in my opinion, love the exposed teeth and the stubble around the mouth, sorry that the picture quality on that one is not up to scratch, I was having trouble with the Sun when I was photographing that one. A delightful church to visit this one, if you are in the area..
Four more below from South Lincolnshire. Above right, a very small gargoyle from Careby. Obviously this fella has retired as his water spout has been filled in from below. He also looks as if he is asleep. To the right of that, something with wings and a surprised expression from Ingoldsby. This church has someone with a sense of humour. When I arrived at this church a note on the door said....Commandment 11A "Thou Shalt Not Smoke Within These Premesis" Below left, even though it is sadly quite worn in places, an impressive gargoyle from Rippingale, supporting the water spout, and two starlings. It looks as if the figure is looking up to see what the birds are doing! To the right of that, gargoyle from the beautiful church at Ropsley.
CAREBY. CHURCH : ST STEPHEN
INGOLDSBY. CHURCH : ST BARTHOLOMEW
RIPPINGALE. CHURCH : ST ANDREW
ROPSLEY. CHURCH : ST PETER
BILLINGBOROUGH. CHURCH : ST ANDREW
Two gargoyles here, with the one on the right being pretty badly daaged. Obviously, a popular meeting place for pigeons this. The noise that they were making was amazing! As you can probably see, it is very difficult....but not impossible to get a picture taken of one of these gargoyles without a pigeon sitting on top!
