BASTON. CHURCH : ST JOHN THE BAPTIST

THURLBY. CHURCH : ST FIRMIN

The church of St John The Baptist, in Baston is a favourite of mine to visit. all of the imes that I have visited the church has been open. This church is a little oasis of peace and tranquility in what is an otherwise very busy village, which can be found right at the side of the A15, close to Bourne.

Some very nicely carved gargoyles are to be found high up on each side of the tower. A few ancient looking gritesques all add to the interest.

Below left, a weathered gargoyle from the church of St Firmin, Thurlby. This fella looks out over the bleak Lincolnshire fens and has every right to look a bit worse for wears when you consider the years of screaming wind and rain that has screamed in over the fens at him.

Below right, man with curiously elongated head and oversized hands from the church of St Andrew at Dowsby, near to Bourne. This is a favourite church of mine. It has a glorious churchyard where I always try and take my lunch amid the peace and quiet when I am in the area.

DUNSBY. CHURCH : ST ANDREW

SEMPRINGHAM. CHURCH : ST ANDREW

The two grotesques above, and the one to the left, are from the church of St Andrew at Sempringham, which is just off the A15, on between Bourne and Billingborough. The picture above right is particularly interesting as it is very rarely that I get the chance to take a picture of a grotesque from this close range. The grotesque in question was found during excavation work in a field close to the present church, and evidently the site of a previous church. This grotesque was found during those excavations, and is now on display inside the church.

Some very decent grotesques to be found on this church. However, on two visits I have strugled both times to get much in the way of decent photographs of the grotesques high up on the tower.

No matter how I tried, just about all of the photographs came out deep in shadow, with the picture above left being by far the best of the bunch.

Beautiful church this one if you get the chance to visit. Some particularly lovely, and elaborately carved slate graves to be found in the immaculately kept grounds.

FOLKINGHAM. CHURCH : ST ANDREW

Many of the photographs from the South Lincolnshire area come from a three day cycling tour that I did in September 2007. The three photographs from Sempringham pictured above, came from that tour, as do the four below, all of which came from the church of St Andrew at Folkingham. Beautiful church this, but sadly very badly damaged earlier that year by a severe storm, with the result being a large hole in the roof, some damaged pinnacles and a very hefty repair bill.

I am very fond of the two immediately below this text box. On the left...well, when you've got to go...you've got to go I suppose but really, in full view, and at the side of the porch!!! To the right of that....well I don't really know what you would call this, but obviously there was a stonemason with a very vivid imagination!
