Heckington. CHURCH : ST ANDREW

I had the good fortune to visit the church of St Andrew at Heckington, on the second day of what was to be a five day, and 56 church, cycling tour of South Lincolnshire. This church kept me occupied (and highly entertained!) for a long while. This turned out to be my most favourite place visited in the five days, and by the number of people visiting the church whilst I was there, I would say that it is a popular place for the tourist to visit.

Gargoyles and grotesques of all shapes and sizes are all over the place. The ones pictured are just a selection of what I took on the day. Weather conditions when shooting were dry and bright...a bit too bright if anything and one or two of the pictures taken suffered as a result.

The gargoyles and grotesques on show here seemed to be of varying ages. I was particularly fond of the more "modern" gargoyle top tight, with head tilted in an inquisitive, and in my mind slight malevolent, manner.

Some very fine work here indeed. Heckington can be found on the A1394, close to the A17, just a few miles from Sleaford. Those wishing to make a day out there might also be interested to see Heckington's famous eight sailed working windmill.
