EDENHAM. CHURCH : ST MICHAEL & ALL SAINTS

I made two trips to the church of St Michael and All Saints, Edenham. One was in early September 2007, on an afternoon of blazing sunshine. The second was early morning on a dull, damp, dismal and depressing Friday morning in mid May 2008. Plenty to keep the lover of gargoyles and grotesques occupied here, hence this church being given its own page. Some super carvings here, especially high up on the tower.

This church has been open each time that I have visited. Absolutelt stunning inside. There is a full page of photographs of this church on my main web site. If you would like to see this page, just click on the photograph at the top left of this page. You will then be directed straight to that page.

Varying ages to the gargoyles and grotesques on display here. The gargoyles pictured immediately above and below this text box were all low down on the East wall and appear relatively modern. Given the dreadful light conditions at the time of photographing these I am quite pleased with how they came out. A few minutes after these were taken, the heavens opened for about four hours! To my mind though, they dont display the character that the four pictured a little further down this page, that are positioned high up on the tower.

Of these, I was particularly fond of the figure second down on the left, with face being pulled open in typical Medieval gesture. Was also very fond of the gargoyle third down on the right, which was shot through the branches of a tree. These seem to be a fair bit older than those on the East wall. The worksmanship on them is superb and they would go down as being some of my most favourite gargoyles in South Lincolnshire

One further thing. Take a look down the poage at the gargoyle pictured bottom right. This would have to be the smallest gargoyle that I have ever seen. Absolutely tiny!!

Edenham is well worth a look if you are anywhere near the Bourne area of South Lincolnshire.
