Chris Stafford'S PHOTOGRAPHS OF GARGOYLES AND GROTESQUES.

Some gargoyles and grotesques from Chris Stafford. The two photographs above, and the one to the left, all come from the church of St Mary, Bottesford. The picture above left appears to have crawled directly out of a medieval stonemasons worst nightmare...whilst the figure above right is holding a cup of some description. Could he be inebriated?

Below left, a nicely carved gargoyle from St Mary at Findon. Below right, unusual gargoyle, with a rather alien appearance, St Mary, Pinchbeck.

The striking images above and left are two more of Chris Stafford's photographs. Mid January 2008, and in a week of rain, dark skies and severe weather warnings by the Met Office, Chris fell lucky and actually found an isolated patch of sun in Northamptonshire!

Chris Says in his E Mail....

"On my way back from Northampton yesterday I stopped off at Wilby to view the remarkable tower at St Mary's in this long straggly village near Wellingborough. It was a nasty day but the sun did make a minor breakthrough for a few minutes here. There were two new (well... newish) gargoyles here and naturally I thought of you. The owl is suitably 'Harry Potterish' and the angel with the shield is a fine strong work. However imagine my surprise when examining the pictures and seeing a very small teddy bear tied through one of the quatrafoils of the corner parapet! I did not see it at the time as I was concerned with getting a fair picture of the gargoyle."

Super stuff Chris, by the way, the picture above does my vertigo no good at all!!!
