LITTLE STUKELEY. CHURCH : ST MARTIN

The two photographs above come from the church of St Martin, Little Stukeley, with both sticking out their tongues. The wizened old man crawling out of the wal below left,l, is again from Little Stukeley. The sightless eyes on this one make it seem all that more horrible. To the right of the old man is a bird from Alconbury's St Peter & St Paul church. Both of these churches had some very fine examples of gargoyles and grotesque.

ALCONBURY. CHURCH : ST PETER & ST PAUL

six more examples, all from Alconbury. The picture above left is a particular favourite of mine...and look out for the tiny stone head in the top right hand corner of that picture. Not sure what the creature is in the bottom left, but it either has its tongue out or has one very large protruding tooth! Just look at the rather...er..."rustic" carving of the stone head pictured bottom left. Not the most finely carved of creations and seemingly a fair bit older than everything else from Alconbury pictured on this page.

ALWALTON. CHURCH : ST ANDREW

Sadly both very weathered, these two gargoyles below can be found at St Andrews church, Alwalton. Decent gargoyles are fairly thin on the ground on the village churches on the Western outskirts of Peterborough. The two gargoyles below, again both from St Andrews Alwalton, were photographed early on Easter Sunday morning 2008, with the snow falling heavily. Bitterly cold as well!
